Friends of the University Park Public Library

What We Did

What

We Did in 2004

To paraphrase the classic song - We get by with a little help from our Friends. In the case of the University Park Public Library, we do far more that simply ‘get by’.

We can all be very proud of our many accomplishments during 2004, none of which would have been possible without the support of our Friends. Some of these accomplishment were:

  • We expanded service hours to 38 per week:
    • 10 am - 8 pm Tuesday / Thursday
    • 10 am  - 4 pm Wednesday / Friday / Saturday
  • Our Fall Evening Lecture featured Dr. Philip Chase Bobbitt, and March 21 at 7:00 pm, we will host a ‘book club’ discussion of Michael Chabon’s book, The Amazing Adventures of Kavelier and Clay, led by Fred Damiano, HPHS English Department.
  • Library Directory, Lee Shuey, continued to guide the staff and trained volunteers who have now cataloged 75% of our 60,000+ volume collection. She continued to upgrade the collection by purchasing new books, reference materials, large print and audio books, videos, compact discs, computer programs and software.
  • Children’s Librarian, Mary Lynn Saxton joined the staff in May, just in time to direct the Summer Reading Club for the 531 children who signed up.
  • We hosted events for both the Hyer and University Park Pre-School Associations.
  • We sponsored Milk and Cookies with the Mustangs, a children’s twilight story hour, during June, July and August, in partnership with the SMU Athletic Department.
  • Albert Huddleston generously renewed our $1.00 annual rental fee for our building space.
  • We received several grants including:
    • The City of University Park - Director, Children’s Librarian and Associate’s salaries.
    • The Bass Foundation - Computer software and technical assistance
    • La Fiesta De Las Seis Banderas - Associate’s salaries and Big Cozy furniture for the Children’s Room
    • The Texas State Library - children’s books and classics

As we work to provide the hightest level of library service to all ages in our community, we continue to rely on our Friends. Please demonstrate your support by joining or renewing your annual membership in our Friends of the Library.
