More than 100 trained volunteers per month work in the library shelving, sorting, and covering books.
Volunteers also help plan and organize Children’s activities, such as Thursday morning Story Hour, the Summer Reading Club, and holiday parties; Adult programs such as the Evening Lecture Series, and social receptions; and conduct Friends events such as quarterly book sales.
Each year, at the Friends Annual Meeting, an award is given in the name of the woman whose perseverance, determination, and dedication over many years, served to ensure that University Park would have a community library.
She began working towards that goal with her son’s Cub Scout Troop. They raised awareness for the cause, and collected the first funds dedicated to the library. She then inspired a community group to form a Friends group to join the effort of establishing the first community library in University Park. For twelve years the Friends group collected dues, elected officers, and worked to find a site. In 2001 the current location was donated by Albert Huddleston, and the University Park Book Bank was born.
She then organized the volunteers to collect donated books and materials, find and train volunteers, sort and arrange the collection, and raise public awareness and financial support. She served as the first President of the Friends after it opened as the University Park Book Bank, and has continued to volunteer countless hours, and offer guidance and direction.
For these reasons, and many others, the Diane Galloway Volunteer Award of the Year was established and awarded to her at the 2002 Annual Meeting.
