Material Donations Policy

Our Library opened in 2001 with a collection of all donated materials. Using grants, Friends’ memberships, individual honorariums, and proceeds of our book sales, we are now able to update and improve our collection by purchasing new materials. However, we continue to accept gently used books, videos, CDs, and DVDs to help build our collection. Keep in mind that donations must be in good condition for circulation purposes. We hope the following guidelines will help you determine if you have suitable items to donate.

 BOOK DONATIONS

  • Adult Fiction – Hardcovers with dust jackets and Paperbacks
  • Non-fiction – Biography, History, Fine Arts, Cooking, Gardening, Decorating, etc.
  • Non-fiction – Social and Pure Sciences, Medicine, Business, Computer  Technology and Career Books published within the last three years
  • Children’s and Young Adult Fiction and Non-fiction
  • Texana (materials about Texas, Dallas, and the Park Cities) whether old or new

VIDEO, CD, DVD, AND BOOKS ON TAPE DONATIONS

  • Videos, CDs, DVDs, and Books on Tape must be in their original containers and in usable condition.  Sets containing more than one CD or audio tape must be complete.
  • Homemade Videos, CDs, and DVDs cannot be accepted because of copyright laws.

MATERIALS WE CANNOT ACCEPT

  • Encyclopedias
  • Magazines, Periodicals, Comic Books, or Newspapers
  • National Geographics – We have one complete set in the collection.
  • Textbooks of any kind
  • Personal Journals

Before bringing your donation to the Library please make sure that all materials are free of mold, mildew, and bugs.  Book pages should not be torn, yellowed, or underlined.

Donations are accepted during service hours and, as a 501c3 organization, we will provide a tax receipt for your records.  For tax purposes, donors must determine the monetary value of their donations. Materials we accept that are not needed for the collection are sold at one of our book sales or donated to other charitable organizations.

We thank you for helping the University Park Public Library build a collection that is worthy of our community!
